Toyota Mirai sets record by traveling 1,360 km without refueling

Last June, the Toyota mirai had set a record by covering 1,003 kilometers on a single tank ofhydrogen. The car just broke that record again, covering 1,360 kilometers on a single tank of hydrogen on a round-trip tour of Southern California.

This distance allows the car to set a new Guinness distance record for a zero emission vehicle. It should be remembered that in 1996 the Toyota mirai became the first hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicle to be marketed in North America.

The record was made according to the official rules of Guinness World Records. During its excursion on 23 and 24 August, the Mirai consumed only 1.55 liter equivalent / 100 kilometers while emitting only water vapor over a total distance of 1,360 kilometers. The car was driven by Wayne Gerdes, an eco-driving specialist, and Bob Winger. The trip, which lasted two days, took place mainly in Southern California.

How does a hydrogen fuel cell vehicle work?

If you are wondering what a hydrogen fuel cell vehicle is, note that it is an electric vehicle which, instead of being powered by a set of batteries, is powered by a fuel cell. hydrogen.

The electric current thus generated powers the electric motor, while the tank can be filled with hydrogen in a matter of minutes. By the way, we obtain a significant saving in weight compared to a traditional electric model. Less weight, more autonomy!

In theory, the solution is very interesting. You have an electric vehicle and zero emissions whose autonomy can be recovered in a few minutes, the time of a refueling. However, it is also not perfect as it requires a complex and expensive distribution network.

Toyota, like Honda and several other manufacturers, also believes that the hydrogen fuel cell is an interesting solution for electrifying several types of vehicles that could hardly be otherwise.

The Toyota Mirai is part of Toyota’s overall strategy to reduce carbon emissions, refuels in about five minutes, offers a range of 647 kilometers and emits only water vapor.
