Honda reclaims rights to use Prelude name

Honda is in nostalgia mode with the reintroduction of many of its old and glorious appellations. We count on the return of the NSX, Type R and Type S versions in addition to the return of the Integra for 2023. Honda has a rich history in terms of sports cars including the Prelude, this mid-size coupe introduced in 1979 and which has lasted until 2001 in 5 different generations. For more than 20 years, not a word, nothing. However, the American publication motor-trend discovered that the Japanese manufacturer has recovered the rights to use the name Prelude since August 15. Therefore, other car manufacturers no longer have the ability to use this name on any product.

Why Honda recovers this name disappeared from the radars for 22 years? The manufacturer understands the importance of respecting its sporting heritage. Even if one can hardly speak of success, the return of the NSX and the Integra in the Acura range has awakened some nostalgic people. More positively, so is the Type R in the Civic’s lineup. It even seems that the S2000 roadster will be back next year. So where is Honda headed with Prelude? Hard to predict! Maybe she just wants to make sure the name still stays in Honda’s hands!

It is also possible that we will eventually see the return of a Prelude coupe to Honda dealerships. We know that the manufacturer is currently working on the design of an electric coupe following the unveiling of a body under a cover. The proportions and size are oriented towards the format that a new Prelude could adopt. This move is certainly not innocent on Honda’s part.

Hundreds of questions remain such as the look, the power, the autonomy. We even wonder if the product will appear in the Honda or Afeela range, the future electric division of Honda in partnership with Sony. One thing is certain, we remain on the lookout, because this return has everything to be exciting in the Honda lineup.
