GM will extend the V2H function to more models that use the Ultium platform

The arrival of electric vehicles brings its share of new technologies to the market, some of which can be very useful in certain cases. This is moreover the case of V2H, a system that sends power to your home from the electric vehicle equipped with this system. Besides, GM plans to extend this technology to all vehicles that use the Ultium platform from model year 2026.

More compatible models

Initially, the manufacturer announced that the Chevrolet Silverado EV RST was going to be equipped with V2H technology. However, the press release issued today by GM announces that it will not be the only one to be equipped with it.

Indeed, the announcement specifies that the other Silverado lines as well as the 2024 GMC Sierra Denali EV edition 1, the 2024 Chevrolet Blazer EV, the 2024 Chevrolet Equinox EV, the 2024 Cadillac LYRIQ and the 2025 Cadillac Escalade IQ will be equipped with V2H . In addition, it is also mentioned that all models based on the Ultium platform will benefit from it, starting with the 2026 model year. It is therefore permissible to speculate that the complete lineup of the GMC Sierra EV, the GMC Hummer EV and the next Bolt will also be equipped with V2H.

Electrify your home

V2H (Vehicle to Home) technology is interesting, since it allows your vehicle to supply your home for a certain period of time during a power outage. However, there is a but. In order to be able to supply your home, it is not enough to simply connect your vehicle to the terminal on your residence. In fact, for the system to be functional, consumers will need to equip themselves with one of GM’s three Ultium Home packages.

The first set called Ultium Home V2H includes a GM PowerShift charger that enables bi-directional V2H charging with a compatible GM EV, when paired with the Ultium Home V2H Enablement Kit. It allows up to 19.2 kilowatt hours of AC charging speed. This bundle also includes the Ultium Home V2H Enablement Bundle which includes an inverter, home hub, and dark start battery that provides 9.6 kilowatt hours of discharge power and a home safe grid disconnect system.

The second offering is called the Ultium Home Power Bundle and includes a GM PowerShift Charger, Ultium Home V2H Activation Bundle, GM Power Bank. It also includes an Ultium Home PowerBank stationary storage unit that can connect to the Ultium Home V2H Enablement Kit to expand backup capacity and store solar or grid power. The powers available will vary between 5 kilowatts/10.6 kilowatt hours and 7 kilowatts/17.7 kilowatt hours.

The third offering is an Ultium home energy storage system that includes the GM power bank, an inverter, and a home hub.

As for the costs, GM did not indicate in its press release the costs associated with each of these three sets. However, it will be necessary to expect to have to pay several thousand dollars, in addition to the electrician’s fees, to make all the connections in accordance.
