2023 Toyota Corolla hatchback says goodbye to manual transmission

Toyota Canada is revamping the charts for the best-selling car in our planet’s history for 2023. The Toyota Corolla in the hatchback version, the look changes somewhat, it bids farewell to the manual transmission and its level of equipment is considerably more extensive.

Slight changes for the hatchback version

The hatchback version benefits from some very minor aesthetic changes for 2023: it is mainly the front and rear bumpers that have been modified to give this version of the Corolla a slightly more refined appearance. Two new colors – Fire Red and Shock Blue Metallic – are also available, and the manual transmission is now conspicuous by its absence, just like in the sedan format of the 2023 Corolla.

To tell the truth, only the GR version of the Corolla benefits from the manual transmission for 2023. This Corolla hatchback which develops more than 300 horsepower is however not quite accessible to all, in large part because of the price of $47,380 she commands. The regular Corolla hatchback will thus be entitled to a continuously variable transmission with fixed first gear identical to that found in its twin sedan in its gasoline-only version.

Low price, but well equipped

If the GR Corolla commands a price that may seem exorbitant to some, the base version (S) of the Corolla hatchback is much more attractive at this level. Its starting price of $25,584 includes standard wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, optional navigation ($19.99/month), standard automatic SOOS emergency call services and remote start for $9.95/month.

A 2.0-litre, 4-cylinder engine is still found under the hood and a continuously variable transmission is paired to the latter. A very respectable 169 horsepower is developed by this powertrain, and an average fuel consumption of 6.7 L/100 km can be achieved by the car.

The $1,900 increase over the 2022 model year is partly justified by the imposition of the CVT-like transmission, but also by the arrival of the new, higher-quality infotainment system that allows connectivity without wire Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
