Toyota unveils the completely renewed 2024 Tacoma

After several years of waiting and an endless series of teasers, the 2024 Toyota Tacoma is officially unveiled. This 4e

generation has been completely revised, from the engines to the various versions offered. As a result, the V6 engine disappears from the range to make way for two 4-cylinder powertrains, one of which incorporates a hybrid system.

4X4 only

Toyota uses a 2.4-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder engine for all trim levels of the 2024 Tacoma. Out of the box, this engine develops 278 horsepower and produces 317 lb-ft of torque when it is is mated to the manufacturer’s new 8-speed automatic transmission. It is this configuration that makes it possible to reach the vehicle’s maximum towing capacity of 2,948 kilos (6,499 pounds).

A very explicit teaser unveiled last week implied that a manual transmission would be offered with the 2024 Tacoma, and it is indeed the case. The 2.4-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder engine can also be mated to a 6-speed manual transmission topped with an automatic engine speed synchronization system. Paired with this gearbox, the engine loses power and torque, i.e. 270 horsepower and 310 lb-ft. In Canada, the 2024 Tacoma is exclusively offered with a 4X4 drivetrain, regardless of the engine or gearbox chosen.

A hybrid system and several box lengths

The other powertrain offered for 2024 will be the most powerful in Toyota Tacoma history. This hybrid group, which bears the name i-FORCE MAX, is composed of the same 2.4-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder engine and an electric motor that delivers 48 horsepower and 184 lb-ft of torque, all mated to the same 8-speed automatic transmission. In total, this engine generates 326 horsepower and 465 lb-ft, or 48 horsepower and 200 lb-ft more than the current V6.

Built on Toyota’s TNGA-F platform, the 2024 Tacoma will be stronger overall, according to the automaker. This platform is the one that hosts the next-generation Toyota Tundra and Toyota Sequoia. As the vehicle is made of high-strength steel and aluminum to reduce its weight, Toyota claims that this generation of the Tacoma will be stiffer than the outgoing generation. It is also thanks to this platform that the manufacturer is able to offer a 5 or 6 foot box, as an option. This becomes an important element of distinction between the vehicle’s two biggest competitors, the 2024 Ford Ranger and the 2024 Chevrolet Colorado, which only offer a 5-foot bed.

Several versions

An all-new cabin should be among the options in Canada. Called the XtraCab, this cab transforms the 2024 Tacoma into a 2-door, 2-passenger vehicle. Attached to the 6-foot bed, this cab becomes the most practical of the lot, according to Toyota, thanks to the addition of lockable rear storage and a range of options to modify it for the job. It will, among other things, be possible to completely fold the passenger seat to create a dedicated workspace. In return, it was only offered in the United States at the time of launch, but Toyota Canada confirms that the XtraCab should be available later in Canada.

At the moment, the Toyota Tacoma 2024 will hit the market in 5 different versions. Each version will consist of the 4-door SuperCab configuration. The entry-level SR5 trim comes with the 2.4-liter turbocharged engine and 8-speed automatic transmission. The TRD Sport and TRD Off Road versions add a series of aesthetic elements such as black wheels or performance elements such as Bilstein suspensions calibrated for the off-road. These are also the only two trims that get the optional manual gearbox.

The Limited version is the most sophisticated of the lot according to Toyota. The Limited Edition is also the first version to get the hybrid powertrain as standard, but it is offered as an option in the TRD Offroad version. Moreover, from the Limited version, all the other editions of the Tacoma are equipped with the hybrid engine and the 8-speed automatic gearbox. Besides the engine, the Tacoma Limited is one of the best equipped in the range. This version includes, among other things, a head-up display, a 14-inch infotainment screen and a 10-speaker JBL audio system. The audio system incorporates a portable speaker in the vehicle’s dashboard. Once installed in the van, the speaker acts as a center box, but when detached, it becomes a Bluetooth speaker allowing up to 6 hours of continuous listening.

2 editions for the adventure

This Toyota Tacoma of 4e generation brings a whole new version to the range. The Trailhunter version is an edition specially developed for off-road and adventure, according to Toyota. This is originally made up of several technical elements capable of dealing with particularly difficult unevenness. In partnership with ARB, an Australian company specializing in off-road vehicle equipment, Toyota has completely revised the vehicle’s suspension. 5 centimeters higher, this monotube suspension is supposed to make driving efficient and comfortable on the beaten path. The Tacoma Trailhunter is also equipped with a steel rear bumper, a 50 centimeter LED light bar, 33-inch Goodyear Territory tires and a roof rack system that allows integration of a tent. Placed at the top of the range, the Trailhunter version adds a series of bronze-colored aesthetic elements, a unique front grille and exclusive color tones to the interior to distinguish this version from the other editions offered.

Another off-road-focused edition returns for 2024. The 2024 Toyota Tacoma TRD Pro has been completely redone. Equipped with a Fox suspension system adjustable in 3 different modes, the TRD Pro 2024 is 5 centimeters higher and 7 centimeters wider than the SR5 version of the 2024 Tacoma. a steel rear bumper and a series of skid plates under the vehicle. Inside, the TRD Pro features new seats specially developed for off-road driving. These, according to Toyota, provide more comfort, reduce fatigue and increase the driver’s focus on the road. Equipped with an air-oil shock absorber system, the seats are able to move horizontally and vertically simultaneously. This therefore reduces body movement and stabilizes the head and neck of the driver and passenger to provide a unique experience, again according to Toyota.

More technologies

The 2024 Toyota Tacoma will get an interior facelift that will do it good. As standard, the Tacoma will have an 8-inch infotainment screen. It will nevertheless be possible to choose a 14-inch multimedia screen, identical to that found in the Toyota Tundra. The system is Bluetooth compatible with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and an inductive cell phone charging station is also part of the options. Tacomas as a whole will be entitled to a push-button start system and keyless door unlocking.

In addition, every Tacoma will come standard with Toyota Safety Sense 3.0. This driver assistance system adds safety features to the van like a forward collision detection system, lane control system, adaptive cruise control and a complete vehicle shutdown system in the event of an accident. emergency.

Pricing for the 2024 Toyota Tacoma lineup is not yet known. Toyota confirms that they will be unveiled when the first copies of the pickup are delivered. The first gas-powered units should arrive in Canada at the end of 2023, while the hybrid versions will hit the ground during the 2e quarter 2024.
