The Biden administration wants to reduce CO2 emissions from personal vehicles by 50%

Several governments around the world have committed to reducing their greenhouse emissions linked to automobiles. This morning, it was the administration’s turn Biden, in the United States, to announce the new emissions rules that will have to be applied in the country. They are strict, but as strict as what was initially proposed.

50% off

The new rules detailed by the current government require a reduction of around 50% in carbon emissions. greenhouse gas (GHG) cars and trucks for individuals by 2032. Reductions are also planned for fine particles that cause smog, a phenomenon increasingly observable in countries, according to some experts.

Although its measures appear radical, the decisions made by the Biden administration are less intense than the initial proposal from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), which last year suggested that automakers shrink by 50% in 2027 and 67% CO emissions2
by 2032.

The EPA also initially wanted two-thirds of new car sales to be electric by 2032. Automakers and unions have called this initial demand impossible, but will still have to adjust , because the new rules will change the automotive landscape. Indeed, in the final proposal revealed today, the Biden administration expects that 50% of vehicle sales in the country will be plug-in or electric by 2030 in order to meet the new requirements.

Impact on Canada

The Government of Canada seeks to ensure that 100% of new light vehicles sold are zero-emission vehicles by 2035, and prides itself on wanting to reduce CO emissions by 45%.2 of the country by 2030.

Given that the United States is a hub in the automotive world, the new rules proposed today should also help Canada achieve its objectives. Indeed, as is often the case, a decision taken by our southern neighbors immediately, or indirectly, impacts our market.

It is therefore possible to believe that the Canadian market will inherit a greater number of plug-in hybrid and electric vehicles in the coming years, as manufacturers will produce more of these types of vehicles to meet demand in the United States.
