Tesla becomes the best-selling luxury brand in the United States

Following the announcement that Tesla was once again smashing sales records in 2022 despite a serious slowdown for the entire industry, we now learn that the Texas-based electric vehicle manufacturer has become the best-selling luxury brand in the United States. United. Indeed, while BMW and Mercedes-Benz continue to sell more luxury vehicles around the world, they have just been overtaken by Tesla south of the border.

Tesla does not publish its sales figures by region or country. It goes there rather by global sales. However, if we rely on the approximately 1 million 300,000 vehicles that the manufacturer sold worldwide in 2022 and the most recent (estimated) data from the data center of Automotive News we see that Elon Musk’s company would have sold around 491,000 vehicles in the United States alone.

This is 158,612 vehicles sold more than BMW, which is ahead of Mercedes-Benz (286,764) and Audi (186,875) with 332,388 vehicles. Speaking of Audi, the manufacturer was even overtaken by Lexus, which accumulated 258,704 copies sold in the United States last year.

It is the first time in nearly 25 years that an American manufacturer has won the title of the best-selling luxury automobile brand in the United States. These figures also send two clear messages to the industry:

First, we see that the setbacks of Elon Musk on Twitter and the decline of Tesla’s stock market have no impact on the manufacturer’s sales, which continue to show phenomenal levels of growth. Secondly, it is clear that the world of luxury vehicles has changed a lot in recent years and that consumers of this social class want more than ever to become owners of an electric vehicle.
