Much longer range for the new MINI Cooper SE

The popularity of MINI Cooper SE, the electric MINI, is undeniable. Just last year, it sold no less than 43,000 copies worldwide, its best year since its launch in 2020. Sailing on this wave, MINI is about to introduce a 3e generation of the electric MINI Cooper.

MINI has been criticized for the Cooper SE’s fairly limited range of 2e generation which did not exceed 183 kilometers on a full charge of its battery which had a capacity of only 32.6 kilowatt hours. Although this is very little by the standards of electrification. Considering it’s designed for everyday urban use, it makes perfect sense. Although MINI is aware of this reality, with the new generation it wants to broaden the horizons.

With now one in four fully electric MINIs, the English manufacturer is on a roll. The current generation, launched in 2015, has just reached one million vehicles produced and, of course, to mark time, it is a Cooper SE which bears the label of the millionth Cooper of 4e generation. Another interesting fact, this MINI was delivered in Canada.

The future is coming

With the new generation of Cooper on our doorstep, it is normal that we are starting to get information on its electric version. Good news, there will no longer be a single electric variant, but two. The base “E” model will have a 135 kilowatt electric motor and a 40.7 kilowatt-hour lithium-ion battery. The more efficient “SE” model will be entitled to a 160 kilowatt motor and a 54.2 kilowatt-hour battery. According to MINI, the autonomy will vary between 300 and 400 kilometers.

The current MINI Cooper SE, including all costs, excluding taxes, retails for $50,936. By including government rebates, it just passes the $40,000 mark to $40,497. This makes it one of the most affordable electric cars on the Quebec market. With the new generation, a significant price increase is expected. More details to come as we get closer to the market launch of the 2024 MINI Cooper SE.
