Hyundai will launch a service campaign on the IONIQ 5 soon

Introduced in 2022, the Hyundai IONIQ 5 is one of the most popular electric vehicles in Quebec. The car had a strong sales year in 2022, and it’s continuing. Hyundai Canada has confirmed to us that a service campaign will nevertheless be launched in Canada soon after an investigation by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) was triggered in the United States. The investigation concerns a loss of power in displacement of the Hyundai IONIQ 5 2022.

A service campaign in Canada

Verification made with Hyundai Canada, the situation under investigation in the United States is indeed being monitored at home. In addition, Hyundai will conduct a service campaign in Canada to try to correct the situation. It is also important to specify that a service campaign is not issued by Transport Canada, but by the manufacturer itself.

NHTSA confirms that approximately 30 U.S. 2022 Hyundai IONIQ 5 owners have filed complaints regarding the power loss. They argue that, during a trip, a loud noise was heard in the vehicle. Immediately afterwards, a warning message appeared in the IONIQ 5 dashboard.

After the two phenomena, a loss of power, partial or total, was felt by motorists. According to the complaints lodged, the drivers even had to quickly pull over to the side of the road in order to avoid an accident. Some owners also added that, after the event, the vehicle was no longer able to accelerate beyond 32 kilometers per hour.

The Integrated Control Charging Unit pointed out

According to documents reviewed, NHTSA and its investigators believe the problem may be related to a malfunction of the Integrated Control Charging Unit (ICCU). This unit is responsible for supplying the necessary energy to the 12 volt battery (accessories) and to the high voltage battery (vehicle energy source). According to the preliminary information from the investigation, the ICCU would receive too high a dose of current which could lead to a malfunction of the system.

Hyundai Canada confirms that it is cooperating fully with the investigation and remains on the lookout for developments in the United States. The manufacturer will correct the situation thanks to the service campaign, a campaign expected for the month of July. This will be limited to an update of the ICCU processing software or a replacement of the unit if necessary.

Canadian owners of IONIQ 5 2022 will be contacted in the coming weeks with more complete information and instructions, according to the manufacturer. For the moment, no accident has been listed, but we will of course remain on the lookout for developments in the file.
