Ford announces 2024 electric E-Transit with extended range

Introduced in 2022, the Ford E-Transit became the first electric van offered on the market, it represented a first electrified alternative for commercial companies. It is in reality a Ford Transit to which the engineers had added an electric motor. The vehicle was powered by a 198 kilowatt (266 horsepower) electric motor powered by a 68 kilowatt-hour battery, giving it a maximum range of just over 200 kilometers.

As competition tightens, notably with the arrival of the 2024 Mercedes-Benz eSprinter and the 2025 Ram ProMaster EV, Ford has just announced some changes to its 2024 E-Transit van to allow it to remain competitive. The manufacturer has improved its autonomy thanks to a new battery, its capacity and its charging speed.

A new long-life battery

According to Ford, the vehicle will now be able to travel a distance of 254 kilometers on a single charge, a 32% improvement over the current model. This maximum autonomy is achieved with the low roof version thanks to a new 89 kilowatt-hour battery now offered as an option. Ford mentions that it will thus be possible to travel greater distances or offer new possibilities such as refrigerated vans.

In terms of engine, the 2024 Ford E-Transit has not changed, it is equipped with a 198 kilowatt (266 horsepower) electric motor which produces 317 pound-feet of torque. Power is sent to the rear wheels through a single-speed automatic transmission.

Faster charging

The 2024 Ford E-Transit benefits from faster charging thanks to new dual on-board chargers that push maximum charging power to 176 kilowatts. It would therefore theoretically take 15 minutes with a fast charger of more than 180 kilowatts to recover 107 kilometers of autonomy. It takes 6 hours if you use the Ford Pro Series 2 charging station.

The 2024 Ford E-Transit remains available in multiple configurations including 2 lengths, 3 roof heights, 3 body styles for a maximum cargo volume of 13,790 liters (487 cubic feet).

Orders will open this spring, and the first deliveries are expected later this year. The vehicle will be offered at a base price of $73,690.

Our opinion

The race for electrification is also in full swing for vans. Ford will have a lot to do, because Mercedes-Benz and RAM have announced very competitive models with greater autonomy.
