End of the road for the Mercedes-Benz A-Class in North America

Is it that Mercedes Benz stretched the elastic down a bit too much with the marketing of the Class A in North America ? If we trust the decision of the manufacturer, it seems so since the range is withdrawn from the offer in Canada and the United States.

The announcements came in flurries, the United States first and Canada a few hours later: the Mercedes-Benz A-Class left North America with a brief career of only 3 years. It would have been amazing if Mercedes-Benz Canada continued to offer it if the United States no longer offered it. Although Mercedes-Benz Canada is “technically” independent in its decisions, the two divisions follow each other very closely. Moreover, it is thanks to this separation between Canada and the United States that we were entitled to the hatchback version that the Americans did not have.

The most popular in the segment

Obviously, Quebec is fond of small cars, and the numbers speak for themselves: the CLA Class included, sales for 2019 and 2020 both exceeded 1,000 copies. That’s almost as much as the Audi A3, BMW 2 Series, Acura ILX and Cadillac CT4 combined. Despite this reality, Mercedes-Benz is withdrawing from the segment. The offer was all in all quite generous with the A220 sedan and the more powerful A250 hatchback. Either way, the full 4MATIC was available. In addition, the AMG performance workshops got involved with the A35 models offered in both sedan and hatchback versions.

Everyone is aware

Mercedes-Benz Canada, through the voice of Zakary Paget, maintains that it wants to focus on its central models: “I can confirm that Mercedes-Benz Canada has recently informed its national network of dealerships that it will no longer offer the A-Class sedan. and hatchback in Canada after the 2022 model year.”

Others stay

The A-Class shares its design with the CLA “4-door coupe” sedan, as well as the GLA and GLB “sport utility vehicles”. These are built on an architecture that promotes traction. Both CLA, GLA and GLB remain available in Canada.

Another example

Another example, Mercedes-Benz has also asserted itself in Canada with the B-Class, while the United States did not want it. It was the story of two generations in his case, and Canada ended up following the Americans even though sales of the B-Class were relatively good.
