Competition from the GMC Hummer EV SUV

We are wading here in a niche of really expensive vehicles. Apart from the Rivian R1S, the other two competitors, the Mercedes EQG and Tesla’s Model X, are even more expensive than the Hummer EV SUV.

Mercedes EQG

Price: over $200,000 (estimate)

So far, the electrified version of the legendary Geländewagen is only a prototype. Presented at the Munich mobility fair nearly two years ago, this conceptual study then had four engines and a two-speed automatic transmission. The architecture of this model is, for its part, similar to that currently employed by the gasoline versions of this all-terrain. The traditional spare wheel hanging from the tailgate is replaced by a box in which the charging cables are located. The final version of this model will enter the global market in 2024.

Rivian R1S

The first deliveries of the R1S (there is an R1T, but it is a van) have started in Canada. Designed by a young American shoot, this utility has 7 seats, 11 cameras (the Hummer has 17) and 2 electric motors. It is possible to add two more for an additional outlay of $11,000. This configuration allows, according to its manufacturer, the R1S to be even faster than the Hummer EV SUV (0-100 km/h in 3.1 s) due not to its power, but to its lower weight. The buyer of the Quad-Motors version will benefit from the larger battery (180 kWh), which will allow him to travel approximately 515 km. A full test of this model will be published soon.

Tesla Model X

Price: from $135,990

Tesla Model X

While the glass surfaces of the Hummer look like loopholes, the Model X has a huge panoramic windshield. Longer than the Hummer, but less wide, the Model X has neither the shape nor the spirit of an off-roader. With reasonable ground clearance and height, this Tesla invites you not to get on, but rather to slip on board, where up to seven occupants can ride. Access is not a problem as long as the openings of the vertically opening rear doors work together. Indeed, their reliability, according to some owners, is uncertain, especially during the winter season. Faced with the Hummer, performance (the Plaid version, in particular), autonomy, functionality and the charging network remain its main assets. The Hummer is more fun to drive and more versatile. The two, however, are evenly matched when it comes to the quality of the interior materials. In both cases, we expected better.
