Change of nomenclature for the next Audi A4 and A6

Like the entire automotive industry, Audi adapts to the transition to electrification. Although the manufacturer intends to keep the name e-tron for its future electric models, Audi would still like to keep its classic nomenclatures. This is why it intends soon to change the identity of the A4 And A6.

This information comes to us from the German media AutoBid who would have had an interview with Markus Duesmann, the CEO of Audi. He confirmed that the next Audi A4 and A6 will become the A5 and A7. In fact, at Audi, it is intended that, in the future, electric models will use even names, while thermal models will rather go to odd names. However, the manufacturer does not intend to abandon the e-tron name for certain models.

What we understand from this statement is that the next generation of the Audi A4, whose marketing is scheduled for next year, will initiate this transformation of nomenclatures. It’s not yet clear whether Audi plans to introduce the electric A4 and gasoline A5 at the same time, and it’s unclear whether the models will look similar. One thing is certain, Audi is testing a new Avant version of its popular compact car, as seen in the images of a camouflaged prototype, captured by the media Motor1.

On the side of the A6, we do not yet know when it will inherit the new name. The most likely hypothesis is that it will become the A7 when it is updated, scheduled for next year. Audi could, however, wait until the next generation of the model, which would not arrive before the 2026 model year, to change its name.

Finally, for the large A8 sedan, Audi has already confirmed that the next generation of this model will only be marketed as an electric model. This is why it intends to keep its classic nomenclature. In all likelihood, the manufacturer has no plan to market a thermal model alongside its flagship sedan.
