Autopilot | A US agency “very worried” about Tesla’s inaction

(New York) The US office in charge of transportation safety, the NTSB, said Monday it was “very worried” about the inaction of Tesla, to whom it had made recommendations regarding its aid systems. driving after an accident in 2017.

The group has never explained how it plans to implement these recommendations even as it is currently testing new features in real conditions, laments NTSB President Jennifer Homendy in a letter to Elon Musk and consulted by the AFP.

In addition to the Autopilot system already offered on its cars, Tesla has been testing since the beginning of October a new version of its driving assistance system, called Full Self Driving Beta (or FSD Beta), with a group of drivers selected by Tesla, without having previously referred it to the regulators.

“You have stated that ‘safety is always the priority in the design of a Tesla,'” Homendy points out in her letter.

“This statement is completely undermined by the announcement that Tesla drivers can request to use FSD Beta both on highways and in urban areas when you have not addressed the design flaws” that caused several accidents, she adds.

Following a collision between a Tesla Model S with Autopilot engaged and a truck in Florida, the NTSB recommended that Tesla and five other automakers incorporate tools into their driver assistance systems that limit their use to the conditions for which they are intended.

The NTSB also recommended that applications be developed to determine when the driver is no longer paying sufficient attention.

Only Tesla never responded, the NTSB regrets.

Nor did the company respond when the agency repeated those recommendations after two accidents with similar origins.

“If you are really serious about putting safety at the center of Tesla vehicle design, I urge you to act on the safety recommendations we sent you four years ago,” Homendy concludes.
